2008 Borsao Tres Picos ($13.99)

Tres Picos is that good ol’ friend that delivers, over and over again.  Both the 2004 and 2005 made it into Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list, and there’s no doubt in my mind, the 2008 should be there.  But, taking away its scores and its fame from importer Jorge Ordonez, what do you have?  A darn good wine.  On the nose it shows off red fruit and black peppercorn.  The palate is big and juicy and sneaks in seductive layers of raspberry and blackberry pie with notes of chocolate and spice.

Stephen Tanzer from the International Wine Cellar recently tasted it scoring it 91Pts. saying its, ‘as ridiculous a value as one can find these days.’  This is what I like to call a no-brainer.

Hi Summer,

How do you compare the Laurel by Clos Erasmus to the Salanques by Mas Doix? Is it worth the difference in price?

I assume you have tried them both and I would appreciate your expert opinion.

Hi Francisco. The Laurel is different from the Mas Doix Salanques in the fact that is is a little more new world. It uses around 50% Grenache and the rest 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Syrah or around there.

The Salanques on the other hand is predominantly Grenache and Carignan, and picks up more flavors from the slate soils (or licorella) and really tastes more like a pure Priorat wine.

The Laurel is a special wine because it is a mini Clos Erasmus and its very good, full-bodied and structured.

I like both, Salanques has always been a favorite of mine. For me the Salanques fits better in my budget and has consistent quality… but that hasn’t stopped me from buying some of the 2007 Laurel for myself. :-)
