Touts & murmurs: Even Consumers Report has a good time

In recent years the earnest souls at Consumers Reports have taken a page or two from the Wine Spectator (the under $15 zone) and why not. If you spent 12 months a year testing vacuum cleaners, you’d want a drink too. And in some cases, like the run on Piper Heidsieck dry a few years ago, CR has the voice of Oprah.

While CR sticks mostly to widely available supermarket brands, the November picks showed imagination in varietals. The magazine’s tasters reported on lusty zinfandel, playful riesling and long lost carmenere as well as the usual suspects. Chardonnay was kissed with tastings by the box.

Cab fans, especially bargain hunters should note that one of CR’s pricier faves is the 2007 Grand Estates from Columbia Crest, one of the consistent reminders that Washington state can be great cab country. The magazine places it at an average $11. At B-21, it’s $7.99.
